How To Decorate A Dorm Without A Tapestry

by Jenny Lallier

Moving back to school can be stressful enough as it is, and that's without considering the dorm room planning. There’s coordination with your roommate(s), figuring out a theme, and more importantly, what to actually buy. Coming up with original ideas can be a struggle, but it doesn't have to be.

Here are some ideas to stay away from that oh-so-basic tapestry (not hating, though).

1. Rug

If your school allows it, you can get a small area rug to spice up your room and give it more personality. Rugs come in all shapes, sizes, and prints, so you can be sure to find one that fits with your overall theme.

2. Neon Sign

To add a bit of edge to your dorm, you can find small light-up signs to add to your walls from Tapestry Girls. They can have inspirational quotes or be completely customizable.

3. Canvas

For the crafty girls, canvases are a great way to make a statement. They allow you to add a lot of personal meaning to your space. You can paint quotes or places that hold significant meaning. If you aren’t super crafty, sites like Etsy have loads of options for cheap!

4. Flag

While this is a little more on the "basic" side, the perfect accessory to decorate a wall is a flag. It could be anything; American flag, State flag, Greek organization -- there are loads of options out there for students to choose from.

5. Framed Posters

Instead of going with the canvas route, you could spice it up with various posters and find cheap frames at places like Tapestry Girls. Posters of various sizes and prints can be found here: Posters.

6. Monogram

If you are really girly, you can order a wooden monogram to go on your wall. They are perfect for above your bed and can be painted to match your room. Sites such as Etsy have various sizes and designs to appeal to anyone.

7. Succulents

A popular dorm theme right now is plants. Succulents are an easy way to mirror a relaxation sanctuary -- something all dorm rooms could use. They also are a great aesthetic to add to your space. They can be found at places like Michael’s and Target.
